Dr. Pavinee obtained an achievement that took time and diligence and only a small number of prosthodontists can say they have.
Completing initial education requirements
Obtaining the initial American Board of Prosthodontics certification is by no means an easy feat. It’s a commitment that begins with completing eight years of schooling, consisting of a four-year undergraduate degree program and four years in dental school. After, the individual must complete a two-to-three-year residency before being able to practice.
If the person would like to specialize in an area of dentistry, that’s additional time in school and a possible fellowship.
For Dr. Pavinee, this requirement included earning the graduate operative dentistry certification and a master of science in prosthodontic dentistry from the Indiana University School of Dentistry.
She then completed an aesthetic and implant dentistry fellowship at the Louisiana University School of Dentistry.
Obtaining Board certification
Once she finished her training, she became eligible to sit for her boards. The first part of the process is a written examination, followed by three oral evaluations.
Overview of board certification
Board certification is the highest accreditation a dentist can receive in a specialty. For instance, a general dentist can receive board certification in general dentistry, while a prosthodontist can become board-certified in prosthodontics—an area of dentistry dealing with dental prostheses.
Board certification requires the individual to demonstrate expertise in that area through additional training and a rigorous examination. Upon completing and passing the exam, the Board awards certification, after which the practitioner must complete 125 additional continuing education credits every five years to remain in good standing.

While there are more than 3,500 practicing prosthodontistsThis link opens a new tab to the American College of Prosthodontists website in the U.S., more than half of them don’t have board certification, further showing what an accomplishment it is.
The general public can see the dentist is willing to take that extra step and has extensive knowledge in that branch of dentistry when they opt for this credential.
